The largest company of the Group AB Achema pays special attention to the reduction of energy costs and modernisation of equipment. Since 2005, the company has invested about EUR 88 million in the modernisation of ammonia workshops and environmental protection projects. Targeted environmental solutions have enabled the company to significantly reduce its greenhouse gases and achieve the lowest possible emissions with the latest technology.

In 2008, AB Achema signed a historic agreement with the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Lithuania on the investments in environmental protection. This means that the company sells the assigned emission reduction units under the Kyoto Protocol’s Joint Implementation Mechanism project and invests the proceeds only in environmental projects. AB Achema’s voluntary implementation of two Kyoto Protocol projects allowed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1.3 million tons per year alone. In 2006, the Helsinki Commission, which is concerned with the protection of the Baltic Sea environment, removed AB Achema from the list of hotspots.

Achema’s environmental initiatives have been repeatedly evaluated. During the National Responsible Business Awards (NAVA) ceremony in 2009, AB Achema was recognised as the Environmental Company of the Year among the country’s largest industrial enterprises. In 2012, AB Achema was recognised as the Greenest Company 2011 among Lithuanian business leaders.
